The Path to Development in the Dock

Abstract

For over half a century, there has been in Haiti an exponential growth in civil society organizations (CSOs) and the issues they address and explore. Whether these organizations are local, national (often affiliated), or transnational in scope, their methods and strategies have been and continue to be profoundly affected by globalization. They increasingly rely on extensive networks to carry out their activities and attempt to influence policies on various issues. Many of them emphasize economic frameworks central to other transnational organizations (IMF, World Bank, etc.). This article simultaneously presents the advantages and disadvantages of civil society organizations as they become involved in actions or interventions related to the search for development pathways in Haiti. Methodologically, the analysis is guided by a dimensional approach—examining the phenomenon through both a single variable and multiple others. The findings indicate that, in the context of civil society organizations in Haiti, social atrophy and hypertrophy go hand in hand.
